NORTHEAST. People don't simply talk about Feast, they enthuse. The concept seems simple enough: excellent gourmet food (but nothing too experimental), reasonable prices, and the option to dine in or take out. The menu changes every month ­ call ahead or check their website to see what's available ­ but virtually every dish is a knockout. You might encounter a savory cheesecake with artichoke hearts, zesty sweet potato chilaquiles, perfect parmesan risotto, a fennel and garlic-rubbed pork chop, or chicken masala over basmati rice and fresh sautéed spinach. Desserts are all exceptional and prepared in-house, including the ice cream, but the chocolate truffle cookies are sublime. If you're going for take out, you can also select a bottle of wine to go.

NORTHEAST. This is the kind of place everyone wishes their hometown had. Something Sweet serves dessert. And a few coffee drinks, teas and other non-alcoholic beverages. But the main thing is dessert: over 10 different cakes, more than 15 pies, 7 cheesecakes, and an assortment of other goodies. Perhaps the pinnacle of indulgence, the "Oh My God, You've Got to be Kidding" Éclair is absolutely huge with a thick layer of the chocolate on top. The place functions as a second home for lots of folks, and with late hours, free WiFi and three customer computers, a slew of board and card games, a free book exchange, and all those fabulous desserts, it's no secret why.

CATALINAS. Nestled among the Santa Clara Mountains, the elegant, sophisticated Ventana Room offers sparkling city views by night and rustic mountain scenery by day. Candlelight and soft music ensure you are worlds away from the wildlife outside.The contemporary American menu, full of Southwestern and French influences, features dishes like seared foie gras, duck confit ravioli, and a mixed grill of game with buffalo, partridge and venison.
